Digital Light Ophthalmoscope (DLO)

Retinal Digital Light Ophthalmoscope

DLO’s Imaging Modes

The DLO uses the red and green channels of its digital light projector source. Users may select either illumination channel through software to image the retina in real-time. The red channel, which provides a deeper penetration of the retina, is commonly used for pupil alignment since it’s comfortable for viewing over extended periods of time. Imaging with the green channel only (i.e. red-free mode) may be performed continuously, or in a short burst, to provide images with fine vessel detail at high contrast.

Users who favor traditional color fundus images may run the DLO in its red-green mode, which rapidly switches between the illumination channels every frame. In red-green mode, the DLO provides users with a confocal, color, streaming video view of the retina.

As with the LSDC, the use of the electronic rolling shutter permits the DLO to operate in a multiply scattered imaging mode.

The macular cross, or bow-tie pattern, shown in the lower right of the images is caused by the birefringence in Henle’s fiber layer. The center of the bow-tie indicates the location of the fovea.
